ARSENE WENGER has admitted for the first time that his Arsenal future depends on his young side's ability to win silverware.
The Gunners boss has been courted by Spanish giants Real Madrid, and his Emirates contract is up next year.Wenger confirmed he will open talks on a new Arsenal deal this summer, but confessed: "My own future will depend on our capacity to win trophies as well as feeling this team is improving year after year, because we are still very young.
"Yes, we will talk this summer and, perhaps in the autumn. At the moment I want to finish this season as well as we can, then we will talk about it.
"But I don't think about who would succeed me. It will not be my job, not my decision."
Arsenal have not won a trophy since 2005. Twelve months ago Wenger hit back at Jose Mourino taunts by insisting it was more important to play beautiful football than to win cups. Now he says it is vital his young Guns win something.
"It's important for this generation to win this year and, after this season, next year," he added.
"But I do think we can win this year.
Real Madrid made a major play for Wenger's services last summer. He refused to deny he had met Real president Florentino Perez and said at the time: "Allow me to remain discreet on that matter."
The Frenchman has won three Premier League titles, four FA Cups and took Arsenal to their first European Cup final.
Asked whether he could leave the club before they win another trophy, Wenger said: "Ideally, no I wouldn't, but at the moment my focus is more short-term - that we finish well."
Wenger takes his injury-hit side to Barcelona on Tuesday for the Champions League quarter-final second leg.
Barca boss Pep Guardiola won the Treble in his first season at the Nou Camp and has been touted as potential successor to Wenger.
But Wenger added: "I am not jealous of him. A career is not one year of coaching.
"It is 20 or 25 years and it is not only about the glory, it is all the rest that is interesting - and that tests you. It was a big gamble and it has paid off very well."
